Mac ignored everyone but Jem, because only Jem was safely in the “would never ever bet on how Mac reacted to finding out Lupe has a dick” camp. And anyway, Jem gave him a big hug and whispered, “They’ll get over it in a day or two, but fuck all of them anyway.”

The rest of the shift was better, somehow. Even though people kept shooting them sideways looks, he and Lupe were good. And Lupe fucked a woman in one of the private rooms toward the end of the night like she was making love on her honeymoon, worshipping, licking, making the lady cry out and come over and over again, and Mac realized he’d never ever brought any girl even a fraction of the pleasure Lupe brought that client. It was sobering, but also kind of reassuring in a way. So all these years he’d been stupid about sex; at least there was a chance he could get better.

If he’d hoped that after that whole night Lupe would have forgotten they had an appointment with the Professor, he was wrong. She sat on the bench in front of his locker and waited for him in her street clothes.

This time when Lupe knocked, the Professor called, “Come in.”

Instead of coming inside with him, though, she opened the door and gave him a nudge. “You promised, and it’s none of my business. You want me to wait for you?”

“It’s okay. I mean, this was the hard part. I think.”

The Professor was now watching them avidly from across the room.

“Just be honest. It’s not on you to have all the answers, sugar.” Lupe kissed his forehead. “Goodnight, Mac.”

“’Night, Lupe.”

The door closed, leaving Mac alone with the Professor for the second time since she’d hired him.

“Hi, Professor.”

“Hello, Mac. Sit.”

Right. Sure. I’ll just sit where I was sitting the last time I was here, when you took off your clothes and climbed on the massage table.

She joined him, again on the perpendicular sofa. Or couch. Or whatever.

Mac cleared his throat. “Uh, so, I think I’m making a really big deal out of nothing, but Lupe said you’d want me to tell you and let you decide.”

“That makes sense.”

Now that he was here, it was the same thing as last night, with Coach. What the hell was he supposed to say?

“I don’t want to get anyone in trouble, Professor.”

The Professor didn’t say anything for maybe a minute, maybe more. When she spoke, her voice was a shade harder than it had been, and Mac straightened his spine almost unconsciously in response.

“You’re here, I’m here, and you’re going to tell me a story. Whether or not anyone gets in trouble has very little to do with you, Mac, unless you knowingly participated in something you knew to be against our rules. Did you knowingly participate in something you knew to be against the rules?”

He looked up. “No.”

“When did this happen?”

“Monday.”

“On the floor?”

Mac shook his head. “A private room.”

“Who was in the room?”

“Me, and Jem, and a client.
